LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Dear Reader,
I would like to highlight some accomplishments we feel proud of so far:
Last semester was our re-building period. We re-charted the chapter back to San Jose State, since its loss in 2003.
Thanks to the repeated efforts of NPPA officers, we were able to navigate towards official status.
In the scope of the semester, we managed to accomplish leaps and bounds of what we thought we could manage.
We had many events that taught its members how to be better professional photojournalists and network with industry leaders.
With the help of our chapter advisers, the school of journalism and mass communications at San Jose State, the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association (SFBAPPA), and the efforts of our members, we held many activities on our campus to advance visual journalism at San Jose State University’s journalism department.
Events and guest speakers featured last semester (not in order):
- NPPA SJSU PhotoNight with Brad Mangin, SJSU photojournalism alumni and contract photographer for Sports Illustrated
- SFBAPPA’s Annual Digital / Multimedia Workshop, where our members volunteered and joined in in the seminars given at SJSU.
- NPPA SJSU PhotoNight with Michael Malone, San Jose Mercury News Director of Photography
- NPPA SJSU Annual Student Photo Gallery at Dwight Bentel Hall, where all participating members showcased their recent work.
- A special presentation by Shafath Syed, Adobe Labs Systems’ software engineer, on Flash Catalyst. Example on how we used the software for promotion here.
*And this semester we have already brought even more members to our chapter from all visual journalism fields in video, still and multimedia photography. We hope to increase awareness of what we are doing, as well as unite students to enjoy the recreational activities and workshops that this chapter offers for no fees to its members (unless directly involved with national association activities).
This semester we have increased our budget, thanks to support from SJSU’s Associated Students. It has opened the doors for our members to attend journalism conferences state and nationwide and bring industry leaders on campus to teach our members the tools and skills they need to succeed in this industry.
I hope you stay tuned to what we have in store next. If you want to know what events are coming up check our calendars for more information.
Sincerely,
-Carlos A. Moreno
